Gonzalo Endara Crow (Ecuador, 1936 - 1996) was a painter and sculptor born in Bucay. From an early age, he showed a great interest in art, and in his youth, he studied painting at the Central University of Quito. He adopted a unique style early in his career, which remained with him throughout his life. The Ecuadorian landscape and the vibrant colors used by indigenous artisans in their work were the two main influences that permeated his art throughout his career. Endara Crow is considered one of the most important Latin American painters of the second half of the 20th century. His universal work offers a profound aesthetic perspective on Andean culture and its people.
His most recognized work is "El Tren Volador" (The Flying Train). Endara Crow was fascinated by trains as a child, as his father worked on the railroad. This experience inspired his masterpiece, in which he depicts a train in flight—hence the title—blending this image with a colorful mountainous landscape.
