Oscar Muñoz (Colombia, 1951) has developed a remarkable career exploring postmodern representation methods. He employs unconventional photography techniques along with mechanical printing and video methods. His work is characterized by transient media such as human breath, water, and dust, addressing the precarious reality of human life.
In the 1980s, Muñoz moved away from traditional techniques like drawing on paper or metal engraving, experimenting with novel processes and supports. In the 1990s, his work underwent a radical rethinking in the use of drawing, engraving, and photography, as well as the relationship of the artwork with space and the role of the viewer and time in forming the image.
Abandoning traditional formats and techniques allowed Muñoz to preserve his primary sources while investigating the ephemeral. His work is based on the intrinsic qualities of the materials and the poetic associations they embody. He uses fundamental elements such as water, air, and fire to refer to life, existence, and death processes and cycles.
Muñoz situates himself in the temporal space before or after the moment when photography fixes the image. His work explores that proto-moment when the image is about to become, creating what can be described as protographic work.
