Rafael Echeverri (Santa Rosa de Cabal, 1952 – Bogotá, 1996) was a prominent representative of pictorial modernity in Colombia. His work, rooted in rational foundations and geometric logic, demonstrated a strong faith in humanity.
Early in his career, Echeverri's art was a fusion of abstract and figurative elements expressed in an expressionist style. However, by 1977, he embarked on a new artistic journey, shifting his focus to geometry, which would define his later production. This transition, marked by a shift in his artistic language, is a fascinating aspect of Echeverri's work. His generally monochromatic works, using white, black, or primary colors, feature subtle three-dimensionality through layered pigments and a double frame.
Considered the Colombian painter closest to Minimalism, Echeverri aimed to express the most with the least, reducing his painting to its essence. He limited his chromatic range, used the square as a framework, and used a bold and innovative approach to composition. He also composed symmetrical works with pure colors and impeccable surfaces. His technique evolved from canvas folds to layered paint and finally to a double frame, showing his link to Constructivism.
Echeverri is remembered for distilling painting to its essence, creating works that reward viewers with visual purity and simplicity, concealing complex depth.
